Help Please

I'm looking for a Luke/Rory fanfiction. I already read the one on ff.net but that was the only one I could find. And while I'm happy just to find that one, I was wondering if anyone know of any others?

Need actors

We are in the middle of a video shoot for a music video and are looking for 3 guys to play a small but important role. The roles are non-speaking and basically require a dual role of a bouncer and a triage nurse. Descriptions below...

It snowed yesterday!

I'm just finishing up my orange juice and then I'm going to head out for my walk.

One of the temp agencies in town is having a job fair this afternoon, so I might dress up and go over with my resume and references and register with them. Temping doesn't pay tons, but it pays something, and at least temping is rarely boring - usually assignments are only two weeks long, so before I have a chance to get really sick of it, I'm done and on to the next place. When I was temping as my primary source of income back in 1998 in Calgary, I had a three-month gig at the power company, but that was the longest job I had. And since then, I've actually managed an office, so I expect I will do well, having had experience doing pretty well everything you need to do in an office. Oh, and also, when I quit temping in Calgary, one of the places I'd been at had actually requested me back. So I'm quality staff, and now I have even more skills to bring to the table.

Okay, so I'm obviously talking myself up to try to get myself excited about the prospect. :P *sigh*

Regardless, I do need to go out this afternoon. I didn't go yesterday, but I need groceries and I need to go to Zellers, so I have no choice. :P

...And I should stop pissing around and actually go for that walk. It's not like it's horrible - maybe 20 minutes of walking, and then I'm home and I'll have breakfast. Given that I'm leaving an hour later than I'd planned...

Green Room - Week 6 - Day 3

Good morning.

How are your personal inner troop levels holding up? Escalating to do battle with the insurgent week? Withdrawing from the day to day? Holding as steady as Craig Finn? Bursting at the seams like something known bursting at the seams?

Or are you too busy writing your entry and reading the others at
http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/275605.html to really have much of a week yet?

Final Fantasy with the Mountain Goats, Webster Hall

This evening I saw Final Fantasy play with the Mountain Goats at Webster Hall. I will never tire of seeing Final Fantasy/Owen Pallett live. These days he's got a guitarist/percussionist accompanying him on some of the songs, and it puts an interesting spin on things. It's really great hearing him play songs alone, play songs with one guy accompanying him, and play songs with a whole orchestra. I've gotten to hear certain songs all three ways, and each is exciting in its own way.

I'm not actually a fan of the Mountain Goats, and I didn't know any of their music even though they were the main act. But live music has to be pretty bad in order for me to hate it, so I had a good time anyway and I enjoyed what I heard. They're a really fun, energetic band.

I got Owen's guitarist/percussionist's attention between the Final Fantasy and Mountain Goats sets and asked if the paper I saw taped to the floor near where Owen had been playing was Owen's set list, and he said it was and asked if I wanted it. Woo! (The actual set deviated a bit from that list. I'm pretty sure there was no "Lamb," unless it's referring to a new song and not "This Lamb Sells Condos.")

Outside before heading to the train, I met the Mountain Goats' bassist, who reminds me of Andrew Bird. He was very friendly. Lack of light --> blurry pic.

A few pics from the show under the cut. )

Tomorrow night: Final Fantasy with the Mountain Goats again, this time in Brooklyn.

The Silent Gondoliers Go Up in the Air

As I learned recently, not everyone knows that The Princess Bride was based on a book. As I have also learned both recently and in the past, not everyone knows that The Princess Bride was not really written by S. Morgenstern and abridged by William Goldman, no matter how convincing the book is about this fact. What I didn't know until recently, however, is that the advertisement for The Silent Gondoliers in the back of the book was not just a joke: it's a real book!

The Silent Gondoliers by William Goldman purports to be a fable by S. Morgenstern, who researched the history of gondoliers in Venice to discover why they no longer sang. For, lo, many years ago, the gondoliers were the grandest and most beautiful singers in the world. People came from all over to hear them sing. The story focuses on Luigi, who is an expert gondolier but a terrible singer.

Unlike The Princess Bride, the story is told in first-person by Morgenstern, who, like Goldman, interjects at times to comment. As you would expect, the book is pretty funny, and it really does read like a fable. It's extremely short, a little over a hundred pages with illustrations, and you can read it in an hour. It's no Princess Bride, but it's cute and worth checking out.

Given what happened yesterday, today was either a very appropriate or a very inappropriate day to catch a free screening of Up in the Air, the new film by Jason Reitman of Juno and Thank You for Smoking fame. Since Diablo Cody has nothing to do with this picture, it is nothing like Juno (except for the presence of Jason Bateman and J.K. Simmons) and very much like Thank You for Smoking. George Clooney plays a man with an unusual job: he flies around firing people. And he's racked up a lot of frequent-flier miles. He lives for those things. He just loves flying, the whole experience. So when a young upstart—played by Anna Kendrick, who looked familiar but I haven't actually seen before, though she plays someone named "Jessica" in the Twilight movies—suggests they start working remotely instead, he is very displeased, so his boss asks him to take her around the country and show her how things are done. How do you tell someone they're let go? That their position is no longer available? That it's really a good thing, just read this informational packet?

Meanwhile, he hooks up with Vera Farmiga, who travels just as much as he does. Could this itinerant nomad really settle down?

Up in the Air tries to do three or four things at once, which leaves everything a bit underdeveloped. Is it a movie about what it's like to fire people? To be fired? Is it a commentary on a nomadic lifestyle? Is it a romance? It's more of a character study, a peek into the life of this man as he comes to understand some things about his life, and even if everything isn't wrapped up in a bow at the end, you feel better for having spent some time with him. He's George Clooney, after all.

If you liked Thank You for Smoking, you will like Up in the Air. If you didn't like Thank You for Smoking, you...still may like Up in the Air, since it's less cynical and has more heart. It's not as slick, but the main character is more likable, and although it's been a while, I think it's funnier. It's already getting Oscar buzz, so I recommend checking it out whenever the hell it actually comes out!

Calgary / Edmonton in winter

There is a possibility that I may have an internship in either Calgary or Edmonton this spring. I've never been to either of these cities. If I were to come up on a scouting trip in January, just how unpleasant will the weather be? NB: I used to live in Grand Forks, ND

365 days of music - 12.01.09

When by Janis Ian

My first exposure to AIDS was through General Hospital. As sad, humorous, lame, and embarrassing as that statement is, I will always be thankful for the experience. In 1995, Stone was diagnosed with AIDS and my little world was blown wide open. I'm sure I'd heard of the virus before that but this was the first time I realized that it could happen to anyone. Yes, Stone and Robin were characters on a soap that led fantastically dramatic and overly angsty lives but, oh, how I related to them. They spoke to my tortured 14 year old soul. To see this storyline play out, to see the anger, pain, denial, fear, acceptance and love that these characters went through, changed my life in a way that I can't properly express. I grew up and, sadly, have come to know far too many people who's lives have been effected by this disease but I've never forgotten the lessons of love and compassion I learned from the groundbreaking and beautiful story of Stone Cates.

A question for the group

My sister and I have extremely similar musical taste. EXTREMELY. We differ on a few things (she hates She&Him, I can't stand Death Cab for Cutie) but, on the whole, we're a 95% musical match. Which is why I was shocked to find out that we don't agree on what qualifies a song as being sexy. She contends that it is 75% lyric content whereas I say it's all about the vibe, lyrics be damned. So, I put it to you dear flist: what is the key factor in qualifying a song as "sexy" in your book? Are lyrical portraits your style or do you prefer to let the instrumentation do the work? What song(s) make you want to grab someone and just make out? Feel free to provide examples to support your opinions.
